Lincoln

My stomach rumbles as I buckle the seat belt back in the shelter of my Mustang. McKenzie hears it over the relentless beating of the rain on the roof and hood.

“I’m hungry too.” She chuckles.

“Let’s grab some Chinese. There’s a new place on the other side of town. It’s a newer development, so they never lose power.” I turn the key and back out of the parking spot.

After ordering and picking up the Chinese food, we pull up back at the house, the rain still coming down hard.

“Wait here.”

I grab the food and run into the house before returning with a large blanket. I open the passenger door, hovering over the opening. McKenzie crawls out, pressing into my side under its cover, and we splash in puddles on our way back to the porch.

“Don’t own an umbrella?” she sarcastically asks when we finally reach the dry safety of my house.

“Oh, thanks for keeping me dry, Linc. That’s so sweet of you,” I playfully snap back, dripping in my soaked clothes.

“Thank you for keeping me dry, Linc,” she repeats in a sweet voice. “I didn’t know you were so needy now.”

I run my fingers through my wet hair. When I fling my hand open at her, she yelps in retreat at the cold drops hitting her.

“I’m going to go change. The food is on the table if you want to grab some drinks from the fridge.” I kick my boots off, pulling my shirt over my head, jogging up the stairs.

After changing into my gray sweatpants and a white T-shirt, I come down to a neatly arranged buffet of our food, plates ready, containers steaming, chopsticks resting on the place mats, and McKenzie waiting for me. I refuse to admit that I’ve missed nights like this. I can’t help but shamelessly glance down at her nipples poking through her T-shirt, which she catches, quickly looking down and tugging her shirt out, ruining the view.

“Wow, it’s like we’re playing house.” I grab the beer she put out for me and sit. “You going to do the dishes too?”

“I suppose I have to earn my keep with you letting me stay here.” She places her bottle down after a long drink of her own beer.

“You can skip the dishes.” I wink.

“Only domestic duties, dear.” She winks back.

“Oh, I guess I should get the spare bedroom ready for you then. I assumed you were going to be in mine.”

“You don’t need to get it ready just yet.” The look in her eyes is warm and yearning, sending my head in a spin.

My heart pounds in my chest, and I heap a spoonful of rice on her plate. “Here. This is getting cold.”

We dig in, loading our plates with lo mein, beef and broccoli, and egg rolls. She tells me about the selection of food in New York. Pretty much how she has any type of food at her fingertips there, whereas selections are slim here. I tell her about Hudson and Charlie meeting and their recent engagement, and delve into more detail on the infamous video of me.
